The Judiciary has trained 35 Assistant Accountants in best practices of financial management as one of the ways to improve their efficiency.
The two days' workshop was held at the Judicial Training Institute in Nakawa on Thursday and Friday (November11&12, 2021).
The Registrar Research and Training, HW Mary Kaitesi, who flagged off the training said it was intended to equip the Assistant Accountants with skills and knowledge in basic financial management and practices to enable them improve on performance in court operations.
"You are here to learn and help the Judiciary to reduce on the enormous accountability queries. Now that our funding has become wider, we need to do better," she noted.
Mrs Apophia Tumwine, the Judiciary's Commissioner Human Resource Management tasked participants to work hard while observing the Judiciary Ethical Code of Conduct.
"We know that some of you are working under difficult situations but we shall get the solutions with time," She said.
Lack of funds to facilitate offices of court Accountants, misallocation of their work to other officers and non-cooperative supervisors were among the challenges raised by the trainees.
While closing the training, the Judiciary Principal Accountant, Mr. Steven Naigo Emitu said the training targeted courts because of the urgent need to minimize the number of audit queries from various courts.
He called for diligence among the cadre when handling bail funds and advised them to seek for technical assistance when stranded.
"Know the right channels through which to address your concerns," Mr Emitu stressed.
Participants were trained on receipting revenue, posting of revenue cash books including bail and security. Other topics included revenue returns, voucher preparation and filing, reporting and accountability, ethics and integrity.
The lead facilitators were; Mr. Owamazima Justus(Senior Accountant), Mr. Micheal Peter Okwalinga (Accountant), Mr. Alex Bamya(Accountant), Ms. Annet Aguti (Accountant) and Ms. Roshen Nabaterega from the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Ms. Susan Harriet Akello, the Principal Human Resource Officer, moderated the sessions.
