Hon. Lady Justice Susan Okakany

Beijing. Mbale Senior Resident Judge, Hon. Lady Justice Susan Okalany was awarded Prosecutor of the Year Award in Beijing, China by the International Association of Prosecutors (IAP).

The award was in recognition of her role in the prosecution of the 2010 Kampala bombing suspects.

According to IAP, the award is "in recognition of her outstanding performance domestically and internationally in the fight against terrorism, by leading the team who performed the first successfully prosecuted case in Africa."

Hon. Lady Justice Okalany, led a team of prosecutors, guided investigations and conducted prosecutions in the terrorism case arising from the July 2010 Kampala bombings that left 76 dead.

Speaking shortly after the win, Hon. Lady Justice Okalany said the award was a result of team work.

Hon. Justice Mike Chibita, the Director of Public Prosecution said the award is not only a befitting award to honor Hon. Lady Justice Okalany and the memory of Ms Joan Kagezi but also to the many countries which contributed to the successful prosecution.

Fifteen defendants were extracted from Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania while investigations stretched from the East African region to Somalia,United Kingdom with 82 witnesses called.
