Hon. Lady Justice Prof. Tibatemwa Elected to the ICJ
Hon. Lady Justice Professor Lillian Tibatemwa Ekirikubinza
Kampala. Hon. Lady Justice Prof. Lillian Tibatemwa Ekirikubinza, a Justice of the Supreme Court of Uganda was elected to the International Commission of Jurists for a five-year term.
This follows an International Commission of Jurists(ICJ) ballot conducted in December 2017 and January 2018. Hon. Lady Justice Prof. Lillian Tibatemwa-Ekirikubinza was elected together with seven other re-known Judges from across the globe; the other African jurist to join at the same time with Hon. Lady Justice Prof. Tibatemwa is the highly regarded Hon. Justice Dr.Willy Mutunga, former Chief Justice of Kenya. Hon. Lady Justice Prof. Ekirikubinza joins two other women from Africa, Hon. Lady Justice Qinisile Mabuza from Swaziland and Hon. Lady Justice Yvonne Mokgoro who was the first black woman to serve on the bench in South Africa.
The ICJ is composed of 60 eminent Judges and lawyers from all regions of the world. It promotes and protects human rights through the Rule of Law, by using its unique legal expertise to develop and strengthen national and international justice systems. Established in 1952 and active on the five continents, the ICJ aims to ensure the progressive development and effective implementation of international human rights and international humanitarian law; secure the realization of civil, cultural,economic, political and social rights; safeguard the separation of powers; and guarantee the independence of the judiciary and legal profession.
Hon. Lady Justice Prof. Tibatemwa is being recognized at a global level for her contribution as a highly regarded legal scholar and a Supreme Court Justice. She is a lady of many firsts.
She was the first East African female to graduate with a PhD in law. First female Professor of Law in East Africa. First female appointed Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Makerere University in Uganda. First Ugandan to be appointed to Uganda's constitutional Court and Supreme Court solely based on scholarly work.
