Chief Registrar Meets JTI Management Team
(L-R): HW Sarah Langa (Chief Registrar) and Hon. Lady Justice Lwanga (Executive Director, JTI)

On Friday (September 11, 2020), the newly appointed Chief Registrar, HW Sarah Langa Siu, held a meeting with the Judiciary Training Institute Management Team to brainstorm on the various issues concerning the Institute.

The CR thanked the team for meeting her on short notice. "I am much honored to be here on such short notice as I begin my new journey as CR and this is because JTI is critical in the Judiciary in terms of your role and the activities you handle and coordinate."

HW Langa said JTI is one of the key stations; her office has to work with because of their role in improving capacity of Judicial Officers through the various trainings they offer.

She noted that with general elections approaching, it was important to plan for the Judges training activities as well as prepare precedents for them so that by the time election petitions trickle in, they are all set.

To improve on the efficiency of Research Assistants, the CR said it was important for them to be trained in judgment writing and emerging trends.

She emphasized the need to train Judicial Officers, especially in the Central Region, on how to handle issues of execution. "As we are all aware, the Executions and Bailiffs Division is closing and execution matters are back in trial courts...let us prepare the Registrars on how to manage this process."

On the issue of the Annual Judges Conference, HW Langa called for early planning to avoid last minute hustle.

She pointed out that,as the Chairperson of the Contracts Committee, one of the challenges they encountered was the fact that most JTI requisitions were done last minute, which affects the efficiency and effectiveness of the Institute.

Further, she stated that it was high time to market JTI as a serious training institute that needs adequate funding to ably plan for activities on its training calendar.

As one of the measures to improve the efficiency of the Institute, the CR said it was important forJTI to be provided with all the necessary equipment.

She shared that she was due to hold a meeting with all Chief Magistrates later this month to discuss how to improve efficiency of the courts.

JTI's Executive Director, Hon. Lady Justice Damalie N. Lwanga, congratulated the new Chief Registrar upon her appointment. She equally commended her kind gesture of meeting with the JTI management team.

"Thank you for asking to meet with us as soon as you entered office. We are so grateful for your concern and we look forward to working with you as a team," she said.

The CR also thanked the JTI team for the congratulatory messages and pledged to do her best to improve the Judiciary.

Deputy Registrars, HW MosesGabriel Angualia, and HW Godfrey Kawesa attended the meeting. Magistrate Grade Ones and Law Reporting Officers; HW Daniel Bwambale and HW Winfred Kyobika were also present. The CR's Personal Assistant, HW Allan Mpirwe Gakyaro, attended.
