Judges of the High Court this morning celebrated Lady Justice Damalie N. Lwanga ahead of her retirement from judicial service, paying tribute to a career distinguished by service, mentorship and professional excellence.
The surprise celebration took place on Day III of the High Court Quarterly Performance Review Retreat at Kampala Nile Resort, Namanve, marking Lady Justice Lwanga’s final quarterly retreat before retirement.
Led by the Deputy Chief Justice, Justice Moses Kazibwe Kawumi, and the Principal Judge, Lady Justice Jane Frances Abodo, the Judges presented Lady Justice Lwanga with a bouquet of flowers and a cake in appreciation of her contribution to the Judiciary.
Reflecting on their longstanding friendship, Justice Kazibwe recalled their early years in service and described Lady Justice Lwanga as a valued colleague and friend whose contribution would continue to be remembered. “Though you are going, you are not going from our hearts,” he said.
The Principal Judge described Lady Justice Lwanga as a “tough and brilliant Judge” whose work has been characterised by seriousness, discipline and remarkable intellect.
Lady Justice Abodo said that beyond her professional excellence, Lady Justice Lwanga would be remembered for her warmth, humour, generosity and mentorship. She thanked her for always being available to guide colleagues and wished her a fulfilling and joyful retirement.
Visibly moved by the surprise, Lady Justice Lwanga thanked the Deputy Chief Justice, Principal Judge, fellow Judges, Registrars and staff for the gesture and for being part of her journey. “I did not expect this. I am overwhelmed. I want to thank you all, my colleagues, the Registrars and all the other people I have worked with, who have been part of my family,” she said.
Reflecting on her years in public service, Lady Justice Lwanga said she treasured the professional experiences and relationships she had built across the justice system.
She particularly reflected on her time at the Land Division of the High Court, which she described as both her first and final deployment as a Judge, and expressed appreciation for the support she received there.
She also recalled her years at the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) and expressed satisfaction that several colleagues she had worked with there subsequently joined the Judiciary.
Speaking on behalf of the former State Attorneys mentored by Lady Justice Lwanga during her service at the ODPP, Justice Tadeo Asiimwe thanked her for teaching and mentoring them in prosecution, saying her guidance had played an important role in shaping their professional careers.
Lady Justice Lwanga thanked her colleagues for their love and support and asked them to continue remembering her in their prayers as she prepares to begin the next chapter of her life.
The celebration concluded with the cutting of cake.
