Earlier today, staff of the Judiciary participated in a Mental Health Awareness Engagement organised by the Department of Finance and Administration at the Supreme Court Conference Hall in Kampala.
The engagement brought together staff from various divisions, registries and units across the Judiciary, including the Accounts Division, Internal Audit Unit, Procurement and Disposal Unit, Policy and Planning Unit, Public Relations and Communications Registry, Security Department, among others.
The engagement aimed to enhance staff awareness of mental health and wellbeing, encourage open conversations about mental health, and equip staff with knowledge and practical skills to recognise and address mental health concerns in the workplace.
The engagement was chaired by the Assistant Commissioner for Procurement and Head of the Procurement and Disposal Unit, Mr. Deo Kasozi, who represented the Under Secretary. He commended the Department of Finance and Administration for organising the engagement, noting that mental health awareness initiatives are important in helping staff reflect on their behaviour and wellbeing, particularly given the pressures associated with the workplace.
Mr. Kasozi observed that administrators, in particular, face considerable demands in managing facilities and supporting the operations of courts, making such engagements timely and relevant.
He encouraged the organisers to consider holding similar engagements more frequently to enable staff to continuously learn, reflect and improve their workplace interactions and personal wellbeing.
Mr. Kasozi also appreciated the facilitator for presenting the subject in a practical and engaging manner. He noted that although some of the information shared may not have been entirely new to participants, the manner in which it was packaged and delivered made it particularly relevant and meaningful.
He extended appreciation to the Accounting Officer for the initiative and reiterated the Administration’s commitment to the wellbeing of Staff of the Judiciary. He encouraged participants to apply the knowledge gained from the engagement in their daily lives and interactions.
The facilitator, Ms. Grace Linda Nabatanzi, Counsellor at Beautiful Aspirations SMC Limited, sensitised participants on mental health and wellbeing, focusing on common concerns such as stress, anxiety, depression and burnout.
She highlighted various risk factors and signs that may indicate that someone is struggling with their mental health, including unexplained fatigue, emotional changes, procrastination, absenteeism, reduced self-care and unhealthy coping mechanisms.
Ms. Nabatanzi encouraged staff to focus on what they can control and influence while adopting healthy coping practices such as getting adequate rest and sleep, exercising, maintaining healthy routines, practising meditation, adapting to challenges and seeking help when needed.
The initiative is part of Judiciary’s commitment to promoting the mental wellbeing of its staff and fostering a healthy, supportive and productive work environment.
